Loving yourself, just as you are
Updated: Oct 31, 2019
I have been functioning as a health and fitness coach for around a decade or so now. During this time, I have worked with a lot of people, many of them primarily interested in trying to improve their physical appearance.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to look and feel your best. But I have noticed that the motivation can stem from either love and respect for the body and mind, or a dissatisfaction with the body and strong desire to change the body to fit in with a certain mental projection or cultural norm.
Love and acceptance of your own unique, magnificent, one-of-a-kind manifestation is the right place to start. Coming to a place where you can love, respect and value yourself, just as you are, right here, right now, in this very moment.
It can take a little work, but it is possible. What’s required is to stop. Stop and reflect on our beliefs, our social conditioning and understandings of life. To understand nature and what you truly are on the deepest level. Then we can come to love and appreciate the body-mind without being completely identified with it. We see the body-mind organism for the miracle it is, and naturally want to nourish it and look after it well.
This is the key. First, get to a place where you are looking after the body for the right reasons. Start there. Then motivation becomes automatic; self-generated. Exercise and activity become fun and sustainable. Happiness is no longer dictated by what is seen in the mirror.
I’m not saying it’s easy, but I know it’s possible. I've seen it happen before my eyes many times, and it's where I aim to move towards with everyone I work with.
