Perhaps the most fundamental aspect of health is your mental outlook. The way you view your external environment literally dictates the nature of your internal environment. Ancient healing modalities have been well aware of this for thousands of years with different levels of understanding. Most people would refer to this as the body-mind connection. I became fascinated by this topic while studying Ayurvedic medicine at college and trying to understand my own health conditions.
After reading various books on the topic including Louise Hay’s work and classic Ayurvedic texts I gained insight into the topic but still felt that there was more to learn. Fortunately for me my teacher at the time Dr Rama Prasad began referring to a practitioner in Melbourne named Greg Neville who had been researching the mind body connection for over 20 years. Apparently he had identified the psychological triggers for over 100 different health conditions. Dr Prasad described Greg’s works as the missing element to Ayurveda, I was sold. As it turned out Greg would be running a 2 weekend seminar in Sydney shortly which would open my eyes to the depth of the subject.
I attended that seminar about 8 years ago and have been studying under Greg ever since. During those years I have come to clearly understand the way our thoughts about life literally effect our physiology. This one seminar changed my life for ever. It was very confronting for me and challenged most of my core beliefs. But I walked away with a clear understanding of life and the mind-body connection. It is a very detailed topic but one I would like to attempt to summerise for you in this blog post so that you can understand my future writing better. It may get a little heavy but I’ll try to keep it simple.
Understanding stress and emotions
Understanding that our brain operates via belief systems you can come to understand that emotions function as a feedback mechanism. Emotions function to teach us that the way we are viewing life is either correct or incorrect. If we are experiencing anger, guilt, anxiety or depression we are viewing life through the small picture. We have become so concerned with our personal story, values and goals that we are failing to see the big picture clearly. We have forgotten that life develops us instead of us developing life. It is through being subjected to uncomfortable and unexpected situations they we are exposed to lessons that we would have otherwise not received in that moment. Seeing things through the big picture we can catch ourselves when we get emotional, reflect on the moment and realise what we are receiving. We can remember that the laws of cause and effect are at play and this situation was always destined to come about. Seeing through the big picture we accept the situation as being “the way it is” and so see the beauty and magnificence of what is unfolding. Through this perspective, love, happiness and gratitude arise.

Using your health conditions as teachers
The human body literally reflects our views about life. If we are concerned about particular topics and abilities in life it will disfunction those abilities within our body and organs. This is the body-mind connection. Our body gets confused between its internal and external environments. While this is a major generalisation it appears to true. My mentor has clearly defined the specific psychological triggers for over 100 different health conditions through almost 30 years of research and counselling hundreds of people with the same health conditions and confirming they were all stressed and concerned about the same topics in life. What gets even weirder is that the topic they are concerned about or more specifically the “ability” was 100% identical to the function of the organ or system that is involved in their health condition.
eg. If a person believes that a person’s ‘ability to take advantage of an opportunity is decreased’ such thoughts would consequently cause the lungs to physically degenerate.
Note: You could be concerned about your ability or even someone else’s ability but that will still effect your health and bodies function.
So when we have a particular health condition we can use that condition to point to our concerns about life. We know that if you have a health condition you have a concern about a particular topic or ‘ability’ in life, and that topic or ability is identical to the function of the organ involved in the health condition.
