Lessons from a tree about connection

May 10, 2017

I've had many realisations about life while observing nature. Trees and animals particularly seem to speak to me.

One day while sitting outside in the sun I watched a leaf slowly fall from the branch of a tree and land by the base of its trunk. I had the following realisation.

We are often so concerned with the “I” that we sometimes miss the “us”

How concerned this leaf may have been for its own daily life and individual needs. Failing to realise how it was a part of something much bigger.

Perhaps the leaf noticed the other leaves nearby but felt they were strangers, felt they were separate. All along they were connected to one another by twig, branch and trunk. All along they contributed to the tree, the system, the whole.

Likewise we remain unaware of our true value and contribution to the whole. We feel we are separate and overlook how connected we truly are. We are often so concerned with the “I” that we sometimes miss the “us”. Our big problems seem much smaller when we see the larger picture.
